The closing of the Muslim mind - Essay Example Basically, the Muslims closed the doors to explore the world a millennium ago hence lagged behind Christian based countries in terms of scientific inquiries, technology advancement and economic development. The closing of the mind began to occur between the 9th and 10th centuries. This was a crucial era in the Islam world because the West countries introduced their cultures. The Muslim did not embrace this cultures hence the closure. The closure of the Muslim mind occurred in two ways. The first was to deny the people the capability of knowing anything new while the second was dismissing reality and unrecognizing it. For example, in the Sunni Islam, both concepts were employed in one Ashââ¬â¢arite theological school. Consequently, the gap between menââ¬â¢s reasoning capacity and reality widened which was the source of Sunni Islamââ¬â¢s woes. Reilly states the history of Islam can be understood in four main phases: the Islamic (7th -13th centuries), the Ottoman (1453-1918), t he nationalist (1918-1991) and post-nationalist (1991- to date as it is the current Islam flourishing (Reilly, 2010). The Ashââ¬â¢arites opposed views of God, the universe and humanity. By the end of the 10th century, booksellers and copyrights were prohibited from trading in literally works of theology, disputation and philosophy which were associated with the Muââ¬â¢tazilites. As such, the processes of dehellenisation and intellectual ossification were restarted once more. Reilly states that in the 12th century, the anti-rationalist and conservative institutions were close to destroying the Muââ¬â¢tazilite influence thus ending the most serious attempts of combining reason with Islam as a religion. As a result, the works of Muââ¬â¢tazilite were destroyed by Ashââ¬â¢arites eventually leading to the closure of the Muslim mind.

Employers are legally obligated to take steps to prevent discrimination and harassment and to investigate and act quickly if a complaint is made (England, 2012). But, one companyââ¬â¢s policy wasnââ¬â¢t very detailed, it only detailed that sexual harassment will not be tolerated against employees. And the companyââ¬â¢s policy did not contain the steps that one need to file a complaint, the company did not give a clear definition and didnââ¬â¢t guarantee the confidentiality of the victim. It is the managers and supervisors responsibility to adhere to, implement and enforce the policies that their company have in place to prevent harassment in the workplace. Discuss the themes addressed in Over the Wall and the devices used to express and examine these themes The play ââ¬ËOver the Wallââ¬â¢ is very interesting and unique, in that instead of having names for each part, the parts are numbered from 1-9. This removes all pre-conceptions you may have had of the characters. The characters keep changing to different numbers throughout the play; this is to highlight the different types of people in society. Any number can play and the narration may be shared out. The play tells the story of an island community living on an island with a wall running straight down the middle of it. These people like to keep themselves to themselves and continue with life the way it always has been led. They have totally no interest in the wall and all of the questions that go with it. Except for the one! He is the one asking all of the questions and searching for the answers. This quest is not shared at all within the island community and everyone chooses to ignore this ââ¬Ënutââ¬â¢. They are all happy to carry on with their daily routines in their pointless lives and see him as an outsider. At the beginning of the play it sounds almost like a fairy tale, ââ¬Å"there was once an islandâ⬠. It then twists this idea by saying, ââ¬Ëif you believe itââ¬â¢. However it quickly shows us the real point and meaning of the play. The narrator comments on many different social members in this play and in the first narrator speech he makes a disparaging remark towards the unemployed, ââ¬Å"everyone had a dayââ¬â¢s work (which in those times was considered a blessing)â⬠. He also comments on peopleââ¬â¢s attitudes in general towards the young and the elderly, ââ¬Å"the old were looked after, as long as they didnââ¬â¢t outstay their welcome.â⬠The young also were ââ¬Å"respected as individuals ââ¬â within reason.â⬠This is so true in modern day societies. The young are not respected because they are seen as immature and the elderly because they are boring and frustratingly slow. The narratorââ¬â¢s first speech ends with ââ¬Å"for, while they were not exactly happy they were not exactly unhappy either.â⬠I think this highlights the fact that people in society are happy with their daily life being very mediocre. We put up with this because we are afraid of change. We sit on the same seat on the bus every day; we have the same routine when we get back from work. (See Figure 5; Number of Stores ) BIM plans to open 400 new stores in 2013 and reach 5. 500 stores in 2015.With the store numbers increases there also has been 14% increase in number of employees in the company in 2011. BIM has been expanding their business, operations in every part. (See Figure 6; Number of Employees) These increases in operation side lead to an increase in number of average daily customers with 14% in 2011. (See Figure 7; Average number of Daily Customers) Of course with these changes, company carried out a 25 percent net sales increase over the industry average in 2011 and 2012. (See Figure 8; Sales and Gross Profit Margin) It is estimated that a sales increase over 20 per cent in 2013.Depending on this net sales growth, Companyââ¬â¢s net profit has been increased by 22% over the last three years. Due to the inc rease in net sales; margin values regarding net profit, gross profit, EBIT, EBITDA have been decreased over 3 years. For Migros, i n 2011 the ratio became a minus value this means Migros lost its asset profitability and started to not to get any profit from their assets. ROE: Stockholders invest to get a return on their money, and this ratio tells how well they are doing in an accounting sense. It measures the performance of companiesââ¬â¢ equities. Again for this ratio, Bim has a much better position. It has higher ratio than Migros and industry. But on the other hand, there has been a small ROE reduction for Bim over 3 years.For example in 2011, ROE is 0. 48 and this means that owners of Bim could get 10% income from their equity that they invest for Bim. Operating Profit Margin: With a higher ratio of Bim, it is more successful in generating from operating its business. It is more important than net profit margin because it measures the profit margin which companies gain from goods and services sales in companiesââ¬â¢ main activity subjects. This ratio is higher than industry ratios which is really imp ortant especially for Bimââ¬â¢s investors.
